Students are also learning Author’s Purpose skills. They are reading many stories and deciding whether the purpose is to entertain, persuade or inform. Students in Homeroom are doing review skills in math and learning geometry.
Congratulations to Chelsy Merrit, and Aubrie Reister, our students of the week. Don’t forget to read!

It’s that time of the year again...FCAT!!!! As third graders in Ms. Luchetta’s class finish reading Leah’s Pony, we are reviewing and strengthening all those skills needed for FCAT. One skill we are going to be really working on is author’s purpose and the main idea. For science, we linked the troubles Leah’s family had growing corn to an internet research project. Students used the internet to answer questions and then drew a picture showing what they learned about corn. Social Studies is still teaching us about the history of European countries. We just finished up a month long writing showing the similarities and differences of summer and winter. This was the longest writing for the students this year! In math we are learning about shapes. We just finished the chapter about naming shapes. Now we are learning about congruent and similar shapes. Parents please keep working with your child to strengthen all skills, especially math and multiplication!

In Miss M’s class we have been preparing ourselves for the upcoming FCAT. In reading we have been taking practice tests to review our Sunshine State Standards. Students also finally finished their “personal narratives” which were personal stories of an event from their life. Student’s also created some amazing art pieces that represent their stories to go along with their writings. In Social Studies, students recently learned about the Whiskey Rebellion and what caused it and the results because of it. Students also learned how Kentucky, Vermont, and Tennessee were finally settled. In Science we have been reviewing TONS of material!!! We recently have looked at what minerals are, and how we can identify them; as well as, the Rock Cycle and how it works. In the coming weeks we will be reviewing how the tilt of the Earth affects our seasons, and Cells, and Systems in our Bodies.
Even though students have been working hard daily, they have still had time to enjoy some fun. Students voted to recently have a “COLTS” Friday. Students tie-dyed t-shirts with blue dye, and decorated them to cheer on their teacher’s hometown team in the Superbowl, the INDIANAPOLIS COLTS!! Students wore their shirts on the Friday before the BIG game, and showed their spirit. Students also participated in Camouflage Day at school for taking part in earning the required 10,000 AR points. Miss M’s class has also recently started receiving a local newspaper in order to help them understand current events. Students are really enjoying reading about the local news.
Our February birthdays are Jennifer Baker and Kimberly Mullin. Happy Birthday Girls!!! Our recent students of the week have been Rosa Najera, Alexandria Pethybridge, and Kevin Ottiwell!
Our AR Leaders for the 3rd Nine Weeks are: Diego Martinez with 20.6 AR points, Austin Courson with 19.8 AR points, Jonathan Sandoval with 16.5 AR points, and Jennifer Baker with 13 AR points. ! The reading you take part in today will help you succeed tomorrow. According to the “General Bobby Knight,” “Reading is the foundation of Education, Education is the foundation to Success!! “ I have every faith you will succeed if you continue to read!! Way to go students.....I am so proud of you!

Mrs. Steiert is SO PROUD OF HER CLASS! They have earned over 1,800 Accelerated Reader Points so far this year! WOW! They have earned 16% of the total A.R. points earned this year at Central. They truly are READING MACHINES:) Mrs. Steiert’s students have really gotten into their Literature Discussion groups so far this semester. They have started with a Roald Dahl Author Study. Students are in groups that read selected books like The BFG, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or The Twits. Within their groups, students set the number of pages they will read before their next meeting date which is always on Thursdays. When they meet, the group chooses a goal for that day. For example, they might decide to compare and contrast two characters or they might explain how one of the characters from their novel is like someone they know, a character in another book or a character from a movie. They keep journals in which they record their goals and discussions. Mrs. Steiert has been impressed with how responsible her students have been with their obligations for their groups.
Mrs. Steiert’s class has been moving right along in Math and Science, also. Her students have done extremely well with fraction concepts as well as converting fractions, decimals and percents. They have also become quite the experts on finding the sale price of an item including sales tax when they visit STEIERT-MART in the corner of their classroom. In Science, students had a blast with Rocks & Minerals and their properties as well as how they are formed and change. They learned some new “Rock” Songs (the songs described different types of rocks and how they were formed) from one of the videos they watched on United Streaming from the internet. Students liked the songs so much that Mrs. Steiert typed them up so they could sing along with the songs.
Mrs. Steiert’s Students of the Week have been Kaylie Arnold and Marsheka Pryor. Congratulations, ladies!

Mrs. Van Deman’s class has been studying hard for FCAT. We are using our highlighters to go back and find information in the reading selections. Congratulations to Ana Bucio, our top AR Reader!
Miss Raulerson’s reading and math classes have been working diligently on FCAT review. We’ve been taking practice tests and reviewing skills to make sure we are prepared to do our best.
Ms. Gaus’ class has been studying the solar system. We have been observing the phases of the moon. We have been successfully preparing for our FCAT Test. Remember class to reach for the stars and you will soar through FCAT!
Have you ever seen a Name Creature? Mrs. Van Deman’s class has—we created them! We made some strange looking creatures using our first name and then wrote about an adventure we had with them. We certainly had some unusual adventures!
Mrs. Whitlock’s reading and math classes have been very busy working on FCAT review. We took the state released reading and math tests last week and for the most part did very well. We are looking forward to doing our very best on FCAT. Our science group has been studying rocks and minerals. We have learned how to do a hardness test to see which mineral is the hardest.
Remember the FCAT Test will begin on Monday, February 26th. We are excited about the opportunity for our students to show off their skills. Make sure your children get plenty of sleep, don’t let them get sunburned, no matter how great the weather is, dress comfortably, and be on time. Nothing is more stressful than being late. Try and make your morning stress free by being organized the night before by laying out clothes, making lunches, etc. Breakfast will be served at school to all students who will be testing. If your child does not like eating breakfast at school, please be sure that he/she has a good breakfast at home.
